Lights, camera, action

I’m sorry to have missed the first class on video, but it sounds as if it went well. And I’m glad to hear Buster was the star of the class. I’m eager to see what you come up with on your practice videos and from my conversations with Mike and Molly, I can tell the wheels are turning for your projects.

Field trip notes

I always love sitting down and listening to how reporters do their jobs, especially really good reporters like Karyn Spencer. I like her enthusiasm and her passion for the story and all of its twists and turns. As a journalist, I love figuring things out, finding out what makes people do things and why, putting all the pieces together in a way that no one has before.

I also appreciate the care in fact-checking, the commitment to narrative and to story. Finding ways to organize your work and taking the time to do them are traits I can use in every part of my life — professional and personal.

Off to the races

And here’s a vote for the other side. Campaigns are races, someone wins. I like this column too.

Media and elections: The horserace dilemma

This column caught my attention because I do think it makes a good point in the difficulty of trying to explain complicated situations in short and pithy sound bites. It’s hard to do and makes things too simplistic.

A possible story/art for political story

This exhibit sounds interesting and might make a good feature story on its own. Maybe for the Scene?

Karyn Spencer’s blog

Here’s a  link to Karyn’s blog about working on a Little Italy house.  I think it’s a great example of a blog: Good writing, great info, reasons to come back. And photos.

Are bloggers journalists?

Here’s a new salvo in that debate.

My new mantra

An article by Bruno Giussani in First Monday from 1997 resonates with me, though I’m afraid it means that I have a lot of catching up to do. What I think could be the hardest part is to think in a nonlinear way.

What’s behind the story

Roy Peter Clark of  Poynter said in much clearer language what I have been thinking about the coverage of Britney Spears and what it says about journalism, culture, society and many other things. His point about the coverage of mental illness and mental illness issues is particularly relevant, I think. http://www.poynter.org/column.asp?id=101&aid=135566
