The power of storytelling

One of my former students, Katie Ryan, wrote this piece for the Jamestown Sun on an accident 40 years ago that took the lives of eight teenagers. Katie weaves together interviews with a sister who survived the crash, police and others.

This is a time when it would have been better for the paper to set this story off in some way on the Web site. I understand the need for revenue, but it was a little disconcerting to begin the story in a thin rail along the side of Web site’s page next to an ad for a walleye fishing contest.

Journalism on a tight rope

Nicholas Kristof’s column offers food for thought for all of us who know journalism can be complicated in its practice. The day-to-day deadlines and push for more information can lead to decisions that might not seem right in hindsight. That doesn’t mean they weren’t the right decisions at the time.
